The Ultimate Road Trip: Day 20 – Thursday: May 12, 2011: Leaving Barrie so Sad!
June 1, 2011
Back to Toronto!
We left Barrie on day 20 of our road Trip. We had vowed to keep a slower pace returning to the Rock! So we took advantage of www.Hotwire.com again, and got two nights at the Sheraton Downtown Toronto on Queen Street. For some reason using Hotwire for Downtown West Toronto usually produces the Sheraton as your hotel, but who is complaining! The Sheraton Downtown Toronto is a great location, across the street from the Eaton Centre and our favorite restaurant – the York Street Keg!
Dinner at the York Street Keg
We had a usual steak dinner on a Thursday night and a great sleep in on Friday morning for the first time in two weeks!
Day 21: Friday May 13, 2011
Day 21 was a special day, our wedding anniversary which was really special as we were originally married on Friday the 13th of May some many years ago! People said we were nuts to so do but it has been a very special date for us on more than one occassion! The weather was great, mid 20C, sunny, humid and we took a nice walk down to Lake Ontario waterfront.
The Boardwalk Toronto Waterfront
We watched Porter Airlines and Air Canada flights landing and taking off from Toronto Island Airport. We flew into Toronto Island Airport on Porter Airlines when the little guy was born – a very convenient access to Downtown Toronto. We found car rentals downtown to be much cheaper than they are at Pearson Airport and you eliminate the cab fare downtown too! However, the Porter Airlines milk run from St. John’s with stops in Halifax and Ottawa and onto Toronto can be very tedious and tiring!. Adding at least an hour and a half versus a direct flight on another airline! As well Porter airplanes do not have inflight personal enteratinment devices which can make for a longer flight with nothing to do! The walk along the boardwalks on the waterfront was really enjoyable. Many people who work in downtown Toronto take advantage of this area to walk and exercise!
We had lunch at a great spot on Front and Church Streets – The Hot House Cafe! The Italian flat crust pizza was gorgeous on the patio with a nice cold beer and great after a long walk in the Downtown heat! We ate there one time before so after two pleasant dining experiences there we would recommend.
Hubby outside the Hockey Hall of Fame
Everything on the menu looks good and all the other patrons while we were there were commenting on how good the food was. Warning: the portions are substantial though and it is reasonably priced, less than $30.00 with tip! We always split the dish when we eat there!
Swimming at the Sheraton Centre Toronto: Top a Carryover from the Bahamas
We did a little shopping after lunch at the Eaton Centre. Later we hit the indoor/outdoor pool at the Sheraton for a swim and a little sun (not much being wary about the skin damage). The big decision after that was where to go for our anniversary dinner? We settled on Il Fornello on 214 King Street West in the heart of the Toronto Theatre District– a very good spot in the evening to be for sure!

Il Fornello was good! Hubby ordered Chicken Parmigiana (breaded chicken with tomato sauce and mozerella cheese and linguini). I had Vitello Limone Pomodoro ( veal scallopini with lemon garlic sauce butter and chive fettuccine). The food was very tasty and the waiters were really nice, especially when we told them that we were from Down East. One of the waiters was from New Brunswick, the other from Cape Breton (who knew)! Both were firmly established in Toronto and seem very happy with their lives in the big city but both explained that they went home every now and again to be with family and return to their roots! We had a great conservation with them and enjoyed the evening very much! We will go back to see if the guys are still there on our next visit.
Anniversary Dinner at Il Fornello
They told us they wouldn’t work anywhere else. Now that’s dedication for you! When we were leaving Il Fornello, it was raining quite heavily and the guys scrounged around and found an umbrella which had been left there sometime ago and nobody had come back to claim. It was a 15 minute walk back to the Sheraton so we appreciated the umbrella very much! These two were so thoughful and such gentlemen!
